The last twenty years or so have yielded some intriguing trends when it comes to bicycling. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that, in just the last 10 years, recreational bicycling has risen greatly in popularity across the United States in both the number of overall enthusiasts and as a percentage of the population.
Nationwide, the most recent statistics, which are from 2020, show that over 600 bicycle riders were killed, and a further 48,000 sustained injuries during motor vehicle collisions. 2018 was the deadliest year for riding enthusiasts with more than 850 deaths on record.
Utah does not have a law requiring riders to wear a helmet. In states with helmet laws, data shows that helmet usage is nearly 9% higher. Wearing a helmet can decrease a rider’s risk of head injury by almost 85%.
As a routine method of transportation, bikes are only used by 1% of the population. Although there are far fewer cyclists on the road than drivers, the activity comes with plenty of danger.
