Toquerville, UT (May 16, 2022) – A driver attempting to speed past another vehicle on Interstate 15 between Kanarraville and Toquerville caused a sideswipe accident that sent both vehicles over a cable barrier and caused injuries to three people.
The collision took place at about 10:30 a.m., near mile marker 39 near the Kolob Canyons and Black Ridge exits on the interstate.
The Utah Department of Transportation said that both sides of I-15 were delayed and the lefthand lane of the southbound side was blocked until about 12:00 p.m.
An official with the Utah Highway Patrol stated that the event involved a 2000 Chevy Impala and a 2019 Nissan Kick that were both heading northbound on the interstate.
He reported that the Impala was traveling well above the speed limit as the driver tried to pass the Nissan on the left. In doing so, the Impala sideswiped the Nissan and resulted in both vehicles going over the cable barrier.
The Impala came to a stop in the median. The Nissan flipped end-over-end into the lefthand lane of the southbound side, ejecting a male passenger in the process.
The man endured multiple broken bones and was taken by ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital. Two women in the Nissan sustained comparatively minor injuries and were both taken to Cedar City Hospital for treatment.8
The male driver, and sole occupant of the Impala, was unharmed during the incident.
The official commented that although the collision is still under investigation, they believe that impaired driving played a role.
The Utah Highway Patrol and the New Harmony Fire Department both responded to the scene.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Some of the injuries most frequently sustained by Utah drunk driving accident victims sustain include:
- Fractured Bones: Fractured bones differ in how severe they are. A fractured bone can include any from a minor hairline fracture that will heal fairly quickly to a serious compound fracture that leaves the bone sticking out through the victim’s skin. Even though bone fractures eventually heal, the process can be a slow, painful, and frustrating one for many crash victims.
- Crush Injuries: This is the name given to the resulting wound when an area of the victim’s body becomes pinned in the wreckage of an accident. A medical crew will need to extricate you from the vehicle quickly in order to stop the crush injury from becoming worse, possibly leading to an amputation.
- Burn Injuries: In some cases, a vehicle collision results in a fire. Vehicle fires can lead to crash victims sustaining profound burn injuries and even asphyxiating.
Just like other personal injury cases, injured victims are eligible to collect compensation from the at-fault party but they will first have to prove that the driver’s negligent or irresponsible act was the cause of their accident. If you are able to prove the other driver’s liability for the accident, you are most likely entitled to recovery.
