Salt Lake City, UT (May 24, 2022) – Officers from the Salt Lake City Police Department are currently investigating a hit-and-run incident that left one man with critical injuries on Tuesday, May 24th.
Police were informed of a collision between two vehicles in the area of California Avenue and 4400 West and California Avenue at about 8:00 a.m.
An investigation determined that the drivers were engaged in a disagreement, leading to one of them chasing the other in their vehicles.
The collision involved three cars and a truck. The force of the truck’s impact pushed one of the cars into the path of an oncoming vehicle unrelated to the incident.
EMTs at the scene transported the driver of the uninvolved vehicle, a man in his 50s, to a local medical facility in a critical condition.
The driver of the truck then fled the scene.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Over three million residents call Utah home, all of whom live, raise families, work, and play. Sadly, as stunning as our state’s landscape is, it also has one of the highest rates of automobile collisions in the country. Many of these crashes result in severe injuries or even death for the people involved.
As highlighted in data examined by the Utah Department of Public Safety, car crashes within the state continue to cause an increasing number of annual deaths. In 2020, more than 53,000 automobile accidents happened in Salt Lake County alone, causing some extent of injury to more than 16,000 people. During that same year, roughly 270 people were killed in car crashes throughout the county.
Some of the most common causes of car accidents in Utah include things such as:
- Aggressive or offensive driving
- Driving while drugged, drunk, or otherwise under the influence
- Driving while drowsy or fatigued
- Driving at excessive speeds
In many cases, the victims of these incidents are pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcycle riders.
As you traverse Utah’s roadways, there are steps you can take to ensure the safety of yourself and your family such as always making sure you are properly restrained, obeying all applicable road signage and traffic laws, and always keeping your eyes on the road in front of you. Never try to operate a vehicle when you are fatigued and keep your books, cell phone, and other distractions out of reach or out of sight so they do not pose a risk to you, your passengers, or those with whom you share the roadway.
Regardless of how mindful and meticulous you may be, it is simply not feasible for you to prevent or predict circumstances caused by another driver’s negligence.
