During the past two decades or so, a few interesting developments have emerged when it comes to cycling. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that, in the past 10 years, recreational cycling has increased wildly in popularity throughout the United States as both a percentage of the population and the number of overall enthusiasts.
As a daily method of transportation, however, bicycles are only employed by about 1% of the country’s population. Although there are significantly fewer bicyclists on the roadway than motorists, riding is not without its perils.
Nationally, the most current data, which is from 2020, shows that more than 600 cyclists were killed, and an additional 48,000 were injured during traffic accidents. The deadliest year for cycling enthusiasts was 2018, with over 850 recorded deaths.
On average, six bicyclists are killed, and more than 850 are seriously injured in Utah each year. Nearly 60% of bicyclists involved in a crash with a motor vehicle are under 19 years of age and close to 80% of them are men.
There are no laws in the state of Utah that require cyclists to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. In states without helmet laws, statistics show that helmet usage is almost 9% higher. Wearing a DOT-approved bicycle helmet can lower a cyclist’s odds of sustaining a serious head injury by about 85%.
