Mendon, UT (June 24, 2022) – Two men from the Utah State University aviation program were killed on Friday, June 24th when their small plane went down in Cache County.
At about 9:00 a.m., dispatchers were notified of a plane crash in the area of Highway 23 and 2684 South, just outside of Mendon. Eyewitnesses assisted police and other emergency responders in finding the Cessna 152.
There were two people on board the USU aviation plane, aviation student Michael Carpenter, and flight instructor Blake Shumway. Shumway was a certified flight instructor and had worked for USU aviation since September of 2021. Carpenter was majoring in professional pilot/aviation technology and was on track to graduate this autumn.
Details about the cause of the crash have not been released as the National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating.
This is the third deadly crash to befall the USU Aviation Technology program in recent years.
