Traffic accidents take place every day in Utah. The most common causes of these accidents include:
- Distracted Drivers: Driving while distracted is the leading cause of auto crashes. Law enforcement has pointed out that the issue of distracted driving is a much larger problem than statistics show because drivers are, understandably, reluctant to admit that they were not paying attention to the road as well as the difficulties that arise naturally when determining fault in an accident. Common types of distracted driving include:
- Sending texts or making calls while you are behind the wheel
- Eating or drinking while driving
- Programming your car’s radio or satellite navigation system
- Being tired
- Teenage Drivers: Data has shown that teen drivers are more likely to be involved in auto accidents. Although the number of car accidents involving teenage drivers is fairly consistent year-round, the total number of fatalities almost doubles in May and June.

- Speeding: Driving too fast is a leading cause of fatal car accidents. More than 11,000 crashes involving speeding motorists occurred within the state in 2016 ending over 100 lives far too early. To make sure that you are driving your car as safely as possible, always follow the speed limit and take road and traffic conditions into account.
