Orem, UT (July 12, 2022) – A police officer from Orem sustained injuries when a driver failed to move over as officers were aiding a stranded motorist on Monday, July 11th in Orem.
According to sources, the incident took place at about 11:30 p.m. in the area of 750 East and 800 North, where officers were helping a driver whose vehicle had broken down.
Although the squad cars had their flashing lights activated, a driver failed to move over and struck the rear-end of one of the police cars, shoving it into the back of another. One of the assisting officers was struck as he attempted to avoid being hit by the vehicle behind him.
Officers already on the scene treated the officer until paramedics transported him to a local hospital.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
A pedestrian is any individual walking alongside a street or in a developed location. At its core, a pedestrian is anyone getting someplace on foot, even if they are only crossing a parking lot between a store and their vehicle. In the state of Utah, there are many local ordinances and state laws that govern how and when pedestrians can use the roadways and they are in place to help keep them safe.
While all intersections are regarded as pedestrian areas, not all intersections have marked crosswalks. Intersections are meant to be appropriate and safe places for pedestrians to cross the street. Certain intersections, however, like the ones in big cities or those with high-speed limits, are generally outfitted with bridges or skyways that provide safe passage for pedestrians and bicyclists.
When a pedestrian is in a crosswalk, drivers have a responsibility to yield the right of way. Taking into consideration the enormous difference between the dimensions and weight of a passenger vehicle and the dimensions and weight of a person, vehicles are obligated to defer under almost all circumstances.
Given the recent astronomical rise in our state’s distracted driving population, many motorists either neglect to give any respect to the safety of pedestrians or fail to notice them entirely. In their hurry to get to the office, baseball practice, or narrowly squeeze through a yellow light, drivers commonly fly through crosswalks, putting Utah’s most helpless people, pedestrians, in danger. Pedestrians hit by cars generally endure manifold injuries with catastrophic, and sometimes life-ending, consequences.
Lacking the safety of a metal structure, or any safety features at all, to cushion them from the blow, pedestrian injuries commonly come with serious physical, emotional, and economic blowback.
When you hire a pedestrian accident lawyer to represent you after your accident, your chances of recovering full monetary compensation are significantly higher than somebody trying to represent themselves.
