Salt Lake City, UT (February 20, 2022) – A police officer was injured in Salt Lake City after an intoxicated driver cut him off and caused an accident on Sunday, February 20th.
According to sources, Utah Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to the scene on Interstate 15 in the area of 600 South for reports of an SUV traveling southbound in a northbound lane.
A trooper located the vehicle near 4500 South. Once the suspect became aware of a police presence, they attempted to swerve in front of the officer but instead hit the squad car.
The driver of the civilian vehicle was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
The trooper sustained non-critical injuries during the impact and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Drunk Drivers in Utah
In 2018 and 2019, the state’s rate of drunk driving arrests fell by 4%. Most of these drivers were arrested in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, and Utah counties, which altogether accounts for 70% of Utah’s DUI arrests. Every remaining county outside of Wasatch Front together made up just 30% of the state’s DUI accidents, a total that is disproportionate to the area’s population.
Just like other kinds of auto accidents, fault on the part of the inebriated driver must be established in order for you to successfully pursue financial compensation for your losses which, in a DUI claim, may include both economic and non-economic damages.
In very few cases, punitive damages may also be awarded provided that the driver exhibited gross negligence in their decision to drive drunk.
