Tooele, UT (April 20, 2022) – Sections of Interstate 80 were shut down until Wednesday morning following a serious accident on Tuesday, April 19th.
At about 3:15 p.m., a tractor-trailer heading westbound near Silver Creek Canyon caught fire. The truck was pulling to the right when the driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll.
The tractor-trailer was hauling organic peroxide, a highly flammable chemical compound, which became compromised in the accident and caught fire. Residents were instructed to shelter in place due to the hazardous gas released into the air.
Both directions of the interstate were shut down as emergency crews dealt with the situation. The eastbound lanes were held until around 8 p.m while the westbound lanes reopened closer to 4 a.m.
Both directions of the Rail Trail in Silver Creek Canyon also remained closed for fear of potential water contamination.
The truck operator sustained non-critical injuries during the crash, which officials investigating the accident believe was caused by equipment failure.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Trucking Accidents in Utah
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of tractor-trailers involved in deadly collisions has seen a 10% increase caused mainly by preventable circumstances such as driver fatigue, unsafe truck operation, oversized and unbalanced payloads, and faulty equipment. Accidents involving oversized commercial trucks are also subject to the same causative factors as other vehicles, including driver fatigue, drunk driving, driver error, equipment malfunction, and insufficient maintenance.
Tractor-trailer accidents that are frequently caused by company and/or operator negligence include overloaded or overweight trailers, defective truck parts, inadequate or no maintenance, insufficient driver training, speeding, or other illegal driving habits, especially when coupled with bad weather or road conditions, and drivers who are fatigued from being overworked who are more likely to make miscalculations and other errors of judgment.
