St. George, UT (April 07, 2022) – A driver was extricated and taken to a local hospital after a three-vehicle collision on Bluff Street on Tuesday, April 5th.
At about 10:00 a.m., police officers and first responders were dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Bluff Street and 500 North for reports of an accident involving a Toyota sedan, a Chevrolet work truck, and a box truck.
Upon their arrival, officers found the Chevrolet partially obstructing the two northbound lanes of Bluff Street. The Toyota was near the sidewalk blocking traffic on 500 North. The box truck was turned west on 500 North next to the turn lane.
Several onlookers checked on those involved in the accident while emergency crews were en route.
The driver’s door of the Toyota was partly torn off, leaving the driver unable to get out. Fire crews arrived and, with the aid of hydraulic rescue equipment, removed the rear driver’s side door. After the woman was freed, she was taken to St. George Regional Hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the Toyota sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The two truck drivers reported no injuries.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Intersection Accidents in Utah
In Utah in 2016, there were about 80 fatal intersection accidents. These accounted for close to 20% of all fatal car accidents that year.
Some of the more standard causes of intersection collisions include;
- Disregarding Stop Signs and Traffic Lights: When drivers disregard red lights or ignore stop signs, they increase their odds of colliding with another vehicle.
- Driving While Distracted: Texting while you are behind the wheel, rubbernecking, and other forms of distraction by drivers increases the risk of an accident.
- Illegal Turns: When righthand or lefthand turns are not allowed, it is usually to lower the chances of an intersection accident as well as traffic congestion. Making illegal turns because they are convenient put you and other drivers at risk.
- Failure to Use Turn Indicators: If other drivers don’t know that you are about to make a turn, the possibility of an accident increases. You should always use your turn indicators if you are merging or changing lanes.
- Driving While Intoxicated: Driving while intoxicated reduces your hand-eye coordination, impairs your decision-making ability, and will almost certainly end in disaster.
