Millard Co, UT (May 17, 2021) – Hazardous material response crews worked all day on a closed down portion of Interstate 15 on Sunday, May 16th after a tractor-trailer went on fire just outside of Kanosh.
The truck was traveling in the northbound lanes in Millard County at about 4:30 p.m.
Due to road construction, no shoulder was available so the driver came to a stop in the righthand lane. The occupants were able to exit before the trailer went up in flames.
Utah Department of Transportation and hazmat workers were called to the scene to perform field tests on the truck’s cargo and discovered it was hauling silicone grease, which is extremely flammable.
In accidents involving hazardous materials, many emergency responders are not familiar with the safety measures that have to be taken to handle this kind of incident without producing more injured victims. Besides being ineffective, this lack of awareness of safety protocol also creates a risky situation for the victims involved in the accident as well as the responders themselves since a lot of mistakes could easily be made when the operation and maintenance of a tractor-trailer or the handling of hazardous materials are not correctly handled.
Federal and state governments are responsible for the safety regulations overseeing the transportation of hazardous materials. Recently, policymakers at both levels re-evaluated the efficacy of current laws, mainly due to the safety concerns surrounding the shipping of dangerous materials.
If failure to abide by the regulations that control safety and compliance where hazardous materials are involved, you have legal options available to you.
