Provo, UT (March 23. 2021) – Officials from the Utah Highway Patrol reported that a woman injured by a driver believed to be under the influence of drugs on Monday, March 22nd is in critical condition.
At about 7:00 a.m., police responded to calls concerning a three-vehicle collision on I-15 near Provo when a GMC Envoy crashed into two other cars and then a concrete barrier.
Troopers conducted field sobriety tests on the driver of the Envoy and recorded that he was unable to maintain his balance while doing a nine-step walk test.
44-year-old Patrick Anthony Nelson, a resident of Pleasant Grove, was initially arrested for investigation of misdemeanor DUI which was raised to an arrest for investigation of felony DUI when UHP troopers got an update on the condition of one of the victims.
Doctors stated that the injuries one of the victims sustained to her brain have turned life-threatening and her odds of survival are extremely low. In the event that the victim does survive, she will “never have the same quality of life or be anywhere in the same condition prior (to the crash).”
The woman is currently in a coma with little to no brain function.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
In 2018 and 2019, the rate of arrests for drunk and drugged drivers fell by 4. The largest percentage of these drivers were arrested in Davis, Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah counties, making up 70 of the state’s drunk driving arrests. Every remaining county outside of Wasatch Front added together comprised just 30 of Utah’s drunk driving crashes, a figure that is disproportionate to the region’s population.
