Washington Co, UT (May 31, 2021) – A man visiting from California was killed during an ATV accident on Sunday, May 30th in a Washington County recreation area.
At about 7:30 p.m., Utah State Park rangers were dispatched to the Sand Mountain Recreation Area in response to reports of an ATV accident and someone experiencing a cardiac event.
A source inside the Utah Department of Parks and Recreation confirmed that 36-year-old Erik Alvarez, a resident of Artesia, CA., was with a group riding solo ATVs when the accident happened. The circumstances surrounding the accident and how many other riders were involved is unclear.
Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate Alvarez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Mr. Erik Alvarez, at this time.
The state of Utah recently established laws stipulating that all riders must pass an ATV safety class and minors must always be supervised by an adult. Many parents, however, frequently break the rules designed to promote the safe use of ATVs. Countless riders of all ages have sustained critical injuries or even been killed when their ATV rolled over on them. The most commonly occurring injuries are spinal cord damage and amputations.
