Salt Lake City, UT (June 28, 2021) – Officials are investigating claims that fire alarms did not go off during a five-alarm fire at an apartment complex in downtown Salt Lake City.
A source inside the Salt Lake Fire Department said the fire erupted at the Incline Terrace apartments at about 2:00 a.m. on Monday, June 28th.
Investigators think it began in the upper levels of the complex’s B building.
Evacuees from neighboring buildings describe people yelling, pounding on doors, and doing whatever they could to wake up those still sleeping inside because no alarms were going off.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that tenants were out on balconies calling out to be rescued. Fire officials assisted with evacuations and said everyone was accounted for.
The Red Cross is working to support evacuees through the displacement.
Several people on the scene, four of whom were firefighters, sustained non-critical injuries during the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for landlords, managers, and property owners to take shortcuts so they can increase their profits in spite of the risks it will pose to residents. If negligence by one of these people aided the fire in any way, you could have a valid claim against them. A skilled personal injury attorney will fully investigate the events preceding it and recognize any plausible violations like:
- Failing to properly inspect and repair extinguishers, smoke alarms, overhead sprinklers, and other fire prevention and detection devices
- Failing to operate in accordance with fire and building codes
- Failing to fix or replace faulty and/or damaged appliances, electrical wires, gas lines, or other potential sources of fire in a timely fashion
For your claim to be successful, you need to prove that the fire was caused by someone else’s negligence. An experienced attorney will know how to investigate the incident, review insurance and real estate documents, and analyze damages and other evidence to ascertain who might be statutorily liable for your injuries or the death of a family member.
