Heber City, UT (June 12, 2021) – Three women died in a fiery car crash between three vehicles on Monday, June 7th that forced the shutdown of the southbound lanes of US-189 for more than four hours.
The crash took place at about 5:20 p.m. when a northbound Jeep Wrangler decelerated and was struck by a Ford F350 pick-up truck driving directly behind it. The force of the impact caused the Jeep to go on fire.
A third vehicle became involved following the initial collision when it T-boned the Jeep.
That third vehicle, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, also went on fire after it collided with the Jeep.
The woman driver of the Jeep, the sole occupant of her car, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger from the Trailblazer also died.
The driver of the Jeep was identified on Saturday as Heber City resident Amy Nelson.
The occupants of the Trailblazer, who have since been identified as 18-year-old Payton Caldwell and 18-year-old Emma Call, both recent graduates from Wasatch High School.
The male driver of the F350 sustained non-critical injuries and received medical aid at the scene. The Jeep also clipped a southbound Ford Escape resulting in minor damage to the vehicle, but neither occupant of the Escape was harmed during the incident.
Officials stated that they were unsure why both the Jeep and a nearby field caught fire after the first impact and are looking into the cause.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims, Amy Nelson, Payton Caldwell, and Emma Call at this time.
