Magna, UT (July 26, 2021) – A multi-vehicle collision involving two tractor-trailers put three people in the hospital with critical injuries and shut down traffic in both directions on State Route 201 on Monday, July 26th.
A report from the Utah Highway Patrol states that the two tractor-trailers were part of a four-vehicle accident that ignited fires in some of the involved vehicles. Traffic was rerouted around the scene. The area remained closed until after 8:00 p.m., according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Troopers reported that the driver of a white pick-up truck was driving recklessly on 7200 West and crashed into multiple vehicles before entering State Route 201. The pick-up then ran a red light causing the driver of an oncoming tractor-trailer to swerve to the right in an effort to avoid a collision. The maneuver was unsuccessful and the two vehicles collided. The force of the impact shoved the tractor-trailer head-first into a dump truck that was stopped for a red light. The two oversized trucks immediately caught fire.
After the white pick0up truck struck the tractor-trailer, it continued through the intersection and T-boned a Subaru, which was also stopped at a red light.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
The Utah Highway Safety Office reported that, in 2001, there a total of 2, 884 accidents involving tractor-trailers took place. 824 of these accidents resulted in victim injuries and an additional 36 were responsible for victim fatalities. 2010 saw a drastic increase in those totals, with more than 500,000 tractor-trailer accidents occurring throughout the year. These collisions left upwards of 100,000 victims suffering from critical injuries, and approximately 5000 victims dead.
