Cedar City, UT (July 16, 2021) – Three railway workers were safely evacuated from a Union Pacific freight train that derailed near Cedar City on Thursday, July 15th.
An official from the Iron County Sheriff’s Department stated that, at about 10:10 p.m., Cedar Communications responded to a 911 call notifying them of a train that had derailed near Lund, a small, isolated community roughly 30 miles from Cedar City.
The train was made up of about 95 cars and operated by a three-man crew. The train’s payload and its total weight have not yet been determined.
All three railway workers were injured during the crash, including one who sustained a serious head injury. In spite of their injuries, the men were able to extricate themselves from the train and get to the upper side of the overturned train. The workers reported there was water covering the tracks just before the train derailed.
A press indicated that because of the rising floodwaters, the workers were unable to evacuate from the top side of the derailed locomotive. Additionally, because of the area’s remote location and a scarcity of medical supplies, the well-being of the injured victims was a major concern.
Sheriff’s deputies and emergency responders had a hard time reaching the victims due to inclement weather and flooding in the area. On Friday, at about 12”50 a.m., responders were finally able to make contact with the stranded men atop the train and start extricating them.
All three were transported by paramedics to area hospitals for emergency medical treatment. Two of the victims were listed in good condition and one was classified as stable.
This accident is under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
The sudden commonality of train wrecks throughout all 50 states in recent years has resulted in the millions of people who depend on freight trains, passenger trains, commuter rails, subways, and other types of trains for their job or their day-to-day commute becoming increasingly concerned about their safety.
Train accidents are commonly caused by basic negligence on the part of a railway company, involving things like worsening track conditions that go unattended to, tools or equipment being left on the tracks, traveling at hazardous speeds around sharp bends in the track, or engineers who are fatigued or even distracted while they are operating a train.
These kinds of negligence often have disastrous outcomes for the crew and/or passengers who are working on or riding the train.
