Cottonwood Heights, UT (October 09, 2020) – A woman was struck by a car and killed as she was trying to cross a street in Cottonwood Heights on Thursday, October 8th.
According to police reports, the accident took place at about 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of Wasatch Boulevard and 8100 South.
Officials stated that the woman was crossing through an intersection while a pick-up truck was waiting on a red light. The woman had not yet made her way across the width of the street when the light turned green, prompting the driver of the truck to proceed through the intersection, where he struck the pedestrian and dragged her under his vehicle.
The victim, who has not yet been identified but described by police as an older female, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local police are currently investigating the cause of this fatal accident, but intoxication is not believed to play a role.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pedestrian injury takes place once every 8 minutes and a pedestrian fatality happens once every two hours somewhere in the United States. Close to 5,000 pedestrians died as a result of car accidents in 2014. In that same year, 15 of all vehicular deaths were pedestrian fatalities.
The impacts of fatal pedestrian crashes throughout our state are something that most families are not prepared to deal with. The mental and emotional pain and suffering are only half of the battle. In many cases, families are deprived of sources of income they have grown to depend on. Additionally, they are often left with towering medical bills and funeral costs.
When victims pass away from injuries sustained in pedestrian accidents caused by reckless, negligent, or careless drivers, their families may be entitled to compensation.
