West Valley City, UT (December 08, 2020) – Officers from the West Valley City Police Department responded to 4000 South Redwood Road after receiving reports of a disturbance on Saturday, December 5th. Upon their arrival, they found a man yelling and damaging property.
According to preliminary reports, when officers arrived on the scene at Redwood Apartments, they tried to communicate with the man, but he ran.
The officers pursued him into the street and were trying to put handcuffs on him when an oncoming car ran into the suspect and one of the officers.
The suspect sustained severe injuries and was transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital.
The officer was struck on both his legs. He was medically evaluated at the scene and then released.
Officials stated that a marked patrol car was in the roadway with its lights flashing and they are unclear on exactly how a civilian vehicle was able to access that part of the street to even be able to hit the two men.
The vehicle that struck the officer and the suspect had two occupants, however, no details about the driver or the passenger were available.
The investigation surrounding this accident is being conducted by a crash analysis reconstruction team.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
In Utah, pedestrians have the right-of-way in both unmarked and marked crosswalks. Pedestrians are permitted to cross the street anywhere they choose unless expressly forbidden. In the event that a pedestrian is attempting to cross the road at a place where there is no marked or unmarked crosswalk, they are obligated to yield to traffic.
Drivers, however, are required to yield to any pedestrian in any crosswalk regardless of whether it is marked or unmarked. Utah Code states that all drivers are expected to show due care in avoiding a collision with a pedestrian, no matter the circumstances.
When pedestrians are injured in accidents caused by the negligence of other drivers, it is crucial that they seek legal guidance from a skilled and knowledgeable pedestrian accident attorney in Salt Lake City as soon as possible. When victims are harmed in collisions, through no fault of their own, they are often able to obtain compensation from wrongdoers to alleviate the financial costs they face for medical treatment, lost wages, property repairs, and a variety of other economic and non-economic damages.
