Riverton, UT (December 10, 2020) – An intoxicated driver is presumed to have played a role in a car accident that left two people critically injured in the city of Riverton on Wednesday, December 9th.
Police at the accident scene stated that at about 9:30 p.m., a driver ran the red light at the intersection of Mountain View Corridor and 12600 South, causing a broadside accident with a car that was already in the intersection.
The driver of the offending car, a 35-year-old male, sustained critical injuries. He was airlifted by medical helicopter to an area trauma center for emergency medical treatment.
His passenger, a 30-year-old woman, also suffered critical injuries. She was transported via ambulance to a local hospital.
The driver of the other car, a 20-year-old woman, was also taken to an area hospital. Officers indicated that she was in fair condition.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
As stated in an in-depth study directed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,307,000 car accidents took place at intersections in 2008, accounting for 40 of all motor vehicle accidents nationwide. This indicates that almost half of the nation’s car crashes occur in intersections.
In that same year, Utah’s 58 fatal intersection accidents constituted 21.2 of its car accident-related deaths, denoting a 6.5 reduction when compared to 2016.
Even though all kinds of accidents can happen in an intersection, by far the most extreme is a broadside collision. Often referred to as being T-boned, these dangerous accidents take place when the front end of one car crashes into the side of another. T-bone and other side-impact accidents caused the deaths of 1,770 vehicle occupants in 2017.
