What Can Happen?
If you watched the news on May 18, then you certainly saw the story of two crashes on Interstate 15 that involved 11 vehicles. The incidents happened in the northbound lanes of I-15 near 2900 South. The first crash involved a semi-truck and five other vehicles. The second crash was between a pickup truck, and RV, and four other vehicles.
All lanes of traffic were temporarily blocked. The RV was damaged so badly in the incident that the trucks normally used for towing could not tow it away.
Somehow, only one person was injured out of both crashes. We know that this incident could have been much worse. In crashes that involve larger vehicles like RVs and semi-trucks, it is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries:
- Spinal cord injuries (with possible paralysis)
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
Each of these injuries can lead to a victim needing extensive medical care and extensive rehabilitation in order to make a full recovery. Medical bills for crash injuries can become tremendous, but they only paint part of the overall picture for crash victims. If a person is not able to work while they recover, they may lose the income they need to support themselves and their families.
For the latest reporting year in Utah, we know that there were more than 158,000 people involved in crashes. Out of those, there were:
- 26,738 people injured
- 281 people killed
All too often, these injuries and fatalities occur due to the negligence or carelessness of other drivers, particularly those who are impaired or distracted.
